Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as a market that would grow for bidet and washlet toilet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's early years were a mirror of Japan's economic development. Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was a return to a traditional sextet style and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. Its edgier sound was indicative of the maturation of group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved ability on the drums and an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper and less cloned earlier recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album just a few months after, and went on a tour around the world to support it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album without one single track titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and singer Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the group. This lineup, minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured a guest appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
